8 Tips to Help You Save on Your Hawaii Vacation

A trip to Hawaii can be one of the most memorable times of your entire life - here are some tips to help make sure that you remember it by the pictures and not by the bills.

Best Time to Actually Book your Flight

Tip 1:

Start watching airline fares. No matter when you're planning to take your trip, go to Cheapflights.com or Skyscanner.com or another flight comparison service and find out what your airfare is likely to cost you.

While you should always book at least a month before you plan to depart to avoid sky high prices on flights (no pun intended), there is also such a thing as booking too early and paying more than you would have if you had waited.

CheapAir.com did a study and found that 54 days in advance was the average best time to book the cheapest fare on any given flight and advises checking fares 3 to 6 months ahead.

One of the best and most recommended flight searching websites, CheapoAir.com, offers great deals on flights along with an option to add a hotel and car to the package. Priceline.com is another great site to search for deals on flights.

Armed with the above four sites you'll likely not find a better deal on your flights. That does not mean, however, you should not try to find a better deal. Always do the research and at least try to get the lowest price.

Tip 2:

Try to avoid booking on a Saturday or Sunday. Most airline sales end by Thursday or Friday only to offer them again by the middle of the following week usually after 12:00 am Tuesday . Try checking prices for flights very early Tuesday morning or on Wednesdays for the most recent sales.

Flights to Hawaii

Tip 3:

Historically the cost of travel to Hawaii is at its lowest  - any time the kids are in school. Which means the best bargain rates on hotels and airfares will be in the fall (from September to mid-December) and early spring (from mid-April to mid-June).

However, don't plan to fly anywhere within 2 to 3 days of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, or Spring Break.

The cheapest day to fly is on a Wednesday

Tip 4:

For better savings consider departing on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. Return on a Tuesday or Wednesday. This is because Monday is a peak travel day when most people, including business travelers, need to fly. Tuesday is far less busy. Wednesdays and Saturdays are equally inexpensive; Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays are equally pricey. That's why it's advisable to schedule vacations from Tuesday to Tuesday rather than Sunday to Sunday.

*** Extra tip - Avoid Afternoon Flights

Look for the earliest possible departure to avoid high fares and delays. Fares are highest on afternoon departures because that's when most people want to fly.

Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort, Honolulu

Hotel (or Flight+Hotel Package Deal)

Tip 5:

You'll find great deals on top Waikiki hotels and resorts at Hotels.com.When looking for hotels, compare the cost of a flight + hotel and a rental car as a package using Priceline.com, CheapoAir.com or again Hotels.com where you could literally save hundreds of dollars booking both your flight and hotel together! If you do the comparison, you really may save yourself quite a bit of money. There are occasions where, if you settle for a cheaper hotel, the total cost of the flight and hotel bought separately may actually be cheaper than as a package deal. Just shop around and compare.

Tip 6:

Pick up free coupons (both in English and Japanese), maps and tourist magazines at the airport or at one of the visitor information centers.  You'll find lots of great deals in them (Especially in the Japanese ones!).

Tip 7:

Make your first stop when in Hawaii at the grocery store or Walmart and get all your bottled water and snacks you will need at local prices, instead of hotel prices. With a bottle of grocery store water and a sandwich you could have a nutritious, yummy breakfast for $4 or so, rather than $8-$15 at the hotel buffet or room service.

Tip 8:

Activities

Now that you've got your flight and hotel booked, the only thing left to do now besides packing is to create a bucket list of things to do while in Hawaii. Whether you’re interested in history, shopping, relaxing on the beach, or doing outdoor adventure activities, Honolulu has something (probably many things) to offer everybody. You can experience one of nature's most powerful wonders when you visit a volcano in Hawaii during the day, attend a Luau or a dinner cruise in the evening. Even when the sun goes down, there is still plenty of fun to be had on the island. If you're looking for the best luau or day tours to volcanoes, museums or just a sightseeing tour, check out the website Tours4fun.com for great deals on day tours, dinner cruises and just about any activity you can think of.

So, now that the flight, hotel and activities are booked, the only thing left now is to get those bags packed and get started for a wonderful adventure in Hawaii.
