Top Five Barcelona Beaches
Barcelona is the most visited city in Spain and the fourth most visited city in Europe after London, Paris and Rome. Barcelona continues to grow as a city brand and attracts millions of tourists every year. Be it the world famous architectural marvel La Sagrada Familia or the museums of Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali, the restless city of Barcelona is always crowded, filled with tourists and never sleeps.
The Summer Olympics of 1992 changed the face of the city and its beaches. All the sailing events were held in Port Olimpic and today the port has 5 popular beaches to its north and 4 to its south. It’s a busy stretch of nearly 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) on the Mediterranean coast and makes Barcelona a popular beach city to get one’s feet sandy and body tanned during the summer. These beaches have grown in popularity since Olympics and are a must visit in Barcelona.
Here is a list of the 5 most popular Barcelona beaches among the 9 along this stretch.
1. Barceloneta Beach
This is the beach you want to visit if you're looking for a crazy crowd, loads of bars and restaurants! This is the most populated one of all the Barcelona beaches and is located to the south of Olympic Port. The place is known for its parties, activities and the very different 'L’Estel Ferit’ sculpture by Rebecca Horn, a popular German installation artist. This sculpture (also known as 'Homenatge a la Barceloneta’) has a unique structure and is made of 4 big cubes standing on one another in a leaning fashion.
2. Nova Icaria Beach
If you're looking for some family fun and not 'Barceloneta’ fun, Nova Icaria is the beach for you and the family. It's widely regarded as a family place and known for its multi cuisine restaurants, activities such as beach volleyball, water skiing, sailing and particularly wind surfing. This is the closest beach to Port Olimpic and the transportation should be effortless.
3. San Sebastian Beach
San Sebastian Beach should be the first beach you visit if you're in the city center. Located to the south of Port Olimpic it is the last beach along the nearly 3 mile stretch and is the longest of all the 9. This is another family friendly beach in Barcelona and famous for windsurfing.
4. Bogatell Beach
This is the beach you must visit if you are sick of the ever buzzing crowd and restlessness of Barcelona. This is one of the lesser occupied among the 9 beaches and a perfect one if you're just looking for a more peaceful atmosphere, clear blue skies and sun. Though not crowded, it has good facilities and can be the best beach option in Barcelona for peace and tranquility.
5. Mar Bella Beach
The most highlighting feature of Mar Bella Beach is that it's the only nudist beach in Barcelona. Apart from that, it is located to the north of Port Olimpic and is ideal for people looking for activities and adventure. One more striking feature of Mar Bella is its beautiful marine scenery.
Sant Miquel, Somorrostro, Nova Mar Bella and Llevant Beach are the other four Barcelona beaches which are equally famous as the above mentioned ones.
Barcelona is a city that can be seen as a tourist’s paradise that has endless things to offer. Beaches are another addition to the diverse list of Barcelona attractions which include architecture, museums, busy streets, nightlife and mountains.
